Offending God

Our culture is victory focused. Think of the amount of time spent watching, arguing and shouting for sports teams? It's all about winning (and fun). 
We expect to fight off our sins by ourselves, too. We don't need help. If we do, we turn to self help books. We don't need help. Nor do we ever want to admit to God that we need His help to fight off sin, when in actuality, we have little hope of doing so alone.
If we do manage to fight off a sin, another crops up: pride. Look what I did, mommy! 
We rarely consider that our actions against God are just that: actions against God. Of course they hurt Him
 Deeply, and probably in a way we cannot understand. He did, after all, give us the breath of life, the air we breathe in and everything else....yet there we stand, mockingly stabbing Him in the back with whatever choice of sin we fixate on. 
Even worse, we hunt through His Word to prove that we can do whatever sin we like, or we avoid the areas of the Word we know speak against our actions. Now we are just stabbing Him in the back while laughing!
No. We don't often consider the pain He takes on, and, as I say, I doubt we could understand it either way. 
How truly incredible it is that by our admitting He is Lord, that He died to cover the disgustingly massive sin of our lives, He will save us. Be with us. Love us. Help us. 
A.W. Tozer, in Knowledge of the Holy speaks of righteousness and judge...and states that they are really one in the same, because God is one. He judges, and is righteous about it; He is righteous and judges about it. The judgement we all deserved without Christ's taking on our sin is righteous---we certainly deserve it. But because of Christ, we will be judged as righteous. As it says, Abraham's faith was seen as righteousness. It is our faith that makes us righteous....but that certainly does not mean we can go about grieving Him because our sins are covered! 
So let us examine our hearts at night on our beds, as the Psalms say. Look for sins, ask to be shown them. Ask forgiveness, ask Him for help.
