Interesting is it not that when times are tough there is an inclination for us to say God has abandoned us. We claim to not see goodness of Him, no sign that He is there in any manner.
We never mention (or want to mention) that it could be our own actions and manners making it seem as though we have lost our footing.
If, however, we spend any true effort listing out blessings of God in those worst of times, it can become "uncomfortably" obvious how blind we may be to signs that He has not forsaken us.
Spurgeon speaks on the classic parable of a house on sand or a house on the rock. We are know what happens to each building when the storms come. Spurgeon has an interesting way of putting it, as the home building materials also make an effect on the survivability of the houses. This is a great point...if we spend our earthly days focused on earthly important things and neglect our heavenly things, our homes will not be as sturdy. The Rock is still the Rock...but we may not stand up to the winds of life's storms. Admittedly God will and does help, but if that relationship is stronger through dedication, I'd like to think there are pylons going deep, deep, deep into the Rock. This strengthening means harsh storms will be so much more easily overcome. Even the storms lasting years such as chronic illness.
