The Disciple Who Went In

Here's an interesting subject. Who was this?

"Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the High Priest, he went with Jesus into the High Priest's courtyard, but Peter had to wait outside the door. The other disciple, who was known to the High Priest, came back, spoke to the girl on duty there and brought Peter in." John 18.15-16

James Stalker, in "The Trial and Death of Jesus Christ", suggests with his sources that this disciple, who went right in with Jesus, was John. 
As John rarely speaks of himself in name--calling himself the one Jesus loved etc., it seems likely to me.
If you think about it, really only the closest to Jesus seemed to be the ones the most determined to be with him...even with Peter's denying of Christ. It would seem that the unnamed disciple would have to be John, Andrew or James...and my bet is on John.
It is John, after all, who stood at the base of the cross while his Savior died before his very eyes. Imagine that. Imagine you are there right now...this brave, wonderful, miraculous man is dying for your every day sins before your very eyes. Blood is dried on his face and body from the scourging, blood drips from his wrists and feet, either straight onto the cursed ground (if one considers the ground cursed for accepting Abel's blood) or along the rough beam of wood. The poor, sinless man lifts Himself up on the cross with every breath, more blood pouring from His wounds with every movement...His body systems collapsing one by one as precious blood vanishes from the body.
John stood and watched this...along with a group of other followers and women, according to the accounts of the four gospels.(It should be said that there are variances between the accounts, yet I believe the four as law, as none say that the person(s) were elsewhere).

Whether the disciple was John or not, the accounts of His trials and death should be looked at slowly and with scrutiny. For when you really slow down, use good authors and learned people to help you as well as (most important) the Spirit, it is then that the enormity of what really happened on the hill of Golgatha hits one hardest
