I have been thinking of how beautiful it is that the word can mean the same thing!
Some might say, then, that the healings weren't healings, he just was providing salvation, or sanctification in some manner. Helping with psychosomatic issues.
I say, from looking at the words used that healing is done for the sin nature, and for the heart nature, and with better tools than we might ever have or find.
"knowing their thoughts, Jesus said, “Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts? 5Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 6But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “Get up, take your mat and go home.” 7Then the man got up and went home. 8When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God, who had given such authority to man." Before this, the leaders heard Him say the man was forgiven, yet rather than being pleased for this man for being whole, the leaders get hostile. What He says when giving Himself authority to forgive sins is equality with or being, God. This is seen as blasphemy as The Messiah will be a great king, removing the crushing force of Roman rule. He is not to be God. However, in all truthfulness, He meets all Scripture requirements I have studied. He is GOD...
In Mark 2.17, He is saying that they don't need salvation, because they don't know they are sick. A cancer has spread and is spreading, but they cannot see it. A clean vessel, filthy inside. They feel, with the same self righteousness we get which nauseated people as much as now as then, how utterly wonderful they were. And here some guy was making them look worse than they already looked to the public!!
Right after this passage is the calling on the 12. I am thrilled by the fact each was called, was wanted, and answered. These people thought at the moment that they were "sick", in need of something this man might offer in strength. possibly the Messiah, fascinating man. Each human is called. It only depends on if he or she sees themselves as needing a doctor or not.
Thinking of healing as salvation is so beautiful. Healed from body ailments, from demonic presences, from shattered hearts and minds, and certainly not least, covering our sins that we might have that deep deep deep relationship with Him.
